Introduction: Dr. Pack is Associate Professor of History and Chair of the History
Department at York University. He previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor
of History at the University of Mississippi and Instructor of History at the University
of Arkansas. He is a graduate of the Univeristy of Arkansas, where he completed his
MA and PhD in History, and Freed-Hardeman University, where he earned his BA in History
and Biblical Studies. He regularly teaches courses in US, World, European, and Public
History. Dr. Pack also currently serves as a member of the Curriculum and Training
Committee of the National Council on Public History and the Management Committee of
the Transatlantic Studies Association. When he’s not in the classroom, you can likely
find Dr. Pack enjoying great food or spending time with his wife and two children.
Teaching Emphases: Dr. Pack teaches a wide variety of courses. As a historian of the
U.S. and its interactions with Europe and Latin America, his courses focus heavily
on international relations, cultural interactions, and comparative history to help
students better understand the interconnected nature of the world in which they live.
He regularly teaches survey courses in US and world history, and offers specialized
upper level courses on the full gamut of American history, Modern European History,
Latin American history, the World Wars, the Cold War, and Public History.
Research Overview: Dr. Pack’s research examines the relationship between the United
States and Great Britain through the lens of Latin America. His current project, Special
Relationships: The U.S., Great Britain, and the Southern Cone, focuses on Anglo-American
involvement in Latin America’s Southern cone from 1964-1982. He argues that as a result
of distinct and constantly changing definitions of national security, the Southern
Cone proved to be a fault line of tension for the normally cohesive Anglo-American
alliance. His next project will be a foray into food history, looking at the role
of state dinners in the conduct of Cold War diplomacy. Dr. Pack has presented his
work at conferences across the country and the world, including the Society for Historians
of American Foreign Relations, the Transatlantic Studies Association, and Britain
and the World.
